First Solar Questions You Should Be Asking—But Maybe Aren't

I've been in procurement for utility-scale solar for about 6 years now. Managing budgets that run into the millions annually, I've negotiated with a lot of module vendors—and I mean a lot. When First Solar comes up, I get the same questions. Every time. From EPCs, from developers, from project finance guys. So here are the answers. Straight, no fluff.

Let me be upfront: my experience is based on projects in the 50 MW to 200 MW range, mostly in the US Southwest and Europe. If you're working on smaller commercial rooftops or in a completely different climate, your mileage may vary.


1. Why is First Solar different from other module manufacturers?

Short answer: They don't use crystalline silicon. They use cadmium telluride—a thin-film technology.

Longer answer: This isn't just a tech flex. The CdTe cell structure means their modules have a lower temperature coefficient (around -0.28%/°C vs. -0.35%/°C to -0.40%/°C for most c-Si). In hot climates, that difference compounds over 25 years. I've seen projects where it added up to 3-5% more energy yield annually. You don't notice it on the datasheet. You notice it in the revenue projection.

Also: their annual degradation rate is quoted at 0.5% for Series 6 and as low as 0.2% for some Series 7 configurations. Compare that to the industry standard of 0.5-0.7% for c-Si. Over 30 years, that's a meaningful gap.

2. Are First Solar modules actually cheaper per watt?

Here's where the cost conversation gets interesting. Their ASP (average selling price) per watt has historically been competitive with Tier-1 c-Si modules—sometimes slightly higher, sometimes slightly lower, depending on market conditions.

But I learned the hard way: unit price is only the start. When I calculate total cost of ownership (TCO) for a 100 MW project using First Solar vs. a comparable c-Si module, I look at:

  • Balance of System (BOS): First Solar modules require specific mounting and wiring. That can add $0.02-$0.04/W depending on volume.
  • Inverter compatibility: Their higher voltage per string may require different inverter sizing. Not a dealbreaker, but it changes the system design.
  • Installation labor: Thin-film modules are lighter (about 40% lighter per m²). On a 100 MW site, that can save a week of labor and reduce crane costs.

One developer I worked with in Texas did a side-by-side TCO comparison for a 150 MW project. First Solar's module cost was $0.28/W vs. $0.27/W for the c-Si alternative. But after factoring in lower installation labor and better energy yield in the heat, their net LCOE was about 2% lower. Not huge. But not nothing either.

The $500 quote became $800 after shipping, setup, and revision fees. The $650 all-inclusive quote was actually cheaper. All good.

3. What's the deal with First Solar's warranty—is it actually better?

Yes and no. Their standard linear performance warranty is 25 years, with a 92% power output guarantee at year 10 and 85-86% at year 25. That's comparable to many Tier-1 c-Si modules.

But here's the thing: First Solar self-manufactures and self-tests. They have their own reliability labs. They're not relying on third-party OEMs for quality control. I've visited their factory in Perrysburg, Ohio. They run accelerated life tests that simulate 30+ years of field conditions in about 6 months. That gives me more confidence than a piece of paper from a unknown lab.

I once had a RMA (return merchandise authorization) with a major c-Si manufacturer that took 8 months to process. First Solar's process? About 6 weeks. That matters when your project financing depends on performance guarantees.

4. Is the Series 7 worth the premium over Series 6?

Depends on your land constraints. Series 7 (FormFactor) has a slightly higher efficiency—around 19-21% vs. 18-19% for Series 6. If you have expensive land or a fixed-acreage constraint, the extra cost might make sense.

But for most utility-scale projects I've seen, Series 6 Plus (460W) is the sweet spot. It's a proven platform with a massive installed base. The price premium for Series 7 is usually about $0.01-$0.02/W, which translates to roughly $1-2 million extra on a 100 MW project. Unless you're land-constrained, I'd lean Series 6.

5. How does First Solar's warranty handle performance degradation claims?

This is something not enough buyers check. Their degradation warranty covers linear degradation, not initial degradation (LID, or light-induced degradation). Some c-Si modules have an initial 1-3% drop in the first few months. First Solar's thin-film modules don't have LID in the same way. Initial stabilization is typically less than 0.5%.

Also, their warranty claim process is documented. I keep a spreadsheet of all my modules' serial numbers and performance monitoring data. Haven't had to use it yet, but knowing the process is defined gives me peace of mind.

6. What about the recycling program—does it add cost or value?

First Solar operates a take-back and recycling program for their modules. It's not free. But it's built into the upfront cost (or offered as a prepaid service).

For a 100 MW project, the recycling cost is roughly $0.005-0.01/W—so about $500k to $1 million. But compare that to the cost of panel disposal at end-of-life for c-Si modules, which can be $20-30 per module if you're paying for landfill or recycling through a third party.

In some jurisdictions (like the EU), mandatory recycling is coming. Having a program that's already verified by the manufacturer is a risk reducer. I'd rather pay a known amount upfront than get hit with an unknown bill in 25 years.

7. Are First Solar modules better in high temperatures?

Yes. Their temperature coefficient is one of the best in the industry. In a hot environment like Arizona or India, I've seen field data showing 2-4% higher energy yield from First Solar compared to equivalently-rated c-Si modules, due solely to temperature response.

That doesn't mean it's a magic bullet. You still need proper ventilation and mounting. But if your project is in a hot climate, it's a real advantage.

8. What about twin-glass modules—does First Solar offer them?

First Solar's standard modules are glass-glass construction by default. That's actually their standard. No separate 'twin-glass' SKU. The glass-on-glass laminate provides better durability and lower moisture ingress risk compared to conventional glass-backsheet designs.

I've seen c-Si modules with backsheets fail due to delamination after 10-15 years. First Solar's glass-glass construction should theoretically last longer. I say 'theoretically' because the field data for 25-year-old thin-film modules is limited. But accelerated testing looks good.

9. How should I evaluate First Solar's financial health before committing to a large order?

Fair question. They're a publicly traded company (FSLR). I look at their backlog—it was about 66 GW as of their Q4 2024 earnings call. That's massive. Their net sales for 2024 were about $2.8 billion, with a gross margin around 50%. They're profitable. They have a strong balance sheet with little debt.

But I also check their capacity expansion plans. They're building factories in Louisiana, Alabama, and India. That's a sign of growth, but also execution risk. If you're placing an order for 2026 delivery, check their manufacturing timeline. I had a project delayed by 6 months once because the factory ramp was slower than expected.

10. When should I NOT choose First Solar?

Honestly, if your project is in a cool, low-irradiance location—think Pacific Northwest or Northern Europe—the temperature coefficient advantage disappears. Efficiency becomes the bottleneck. In those conditions, a high-efficiency c-Si module (22-23%) might produce more energy per square meter.

Also, if you have a very small rooftop (< 100 kW), the logistics of dealing with a large manufacturer like First Solar might be painful. Their minimum order quantities can be high. You're better off with a distributor.

And if your project timeline requires modules in 8 weeks and First Solar's lead time is 16 weeks? Then you buy c-Si. Simple as that.

I've only worked with utility-scale players. I can't speak to how these principles apply to residential or small commercial installations.
