Here's a take that might get me in trouble: small solar buyers don't need VIP treatment. They need something more basic—to be treated like real customers. I didn't always believe that. In fact, my first year in procurement taught me the opposite.

I'm the person who handles equipment orders for renewable projects. Eight years in, I've personally made (and documented) 14 significant mistakes, totaling roughly $180,000 in wasted budget. Why the market context matters

Here's some context that every small buyer should understand. China's solar capacity installed in the first half of 2025 is expected to be another monster number. According to China's National Energy Administration (nea.gov.cn), the country just keeps breaking its own records. Honestly, I'm not sure whether the 2025 first-half number will hit 130 GW or 150 GW. My best guess: it'll be big enough to tighten global supply chains all over again.

What does that mean for a 200 kW pilot project? It means component lead times stretch, prices get volatile, and large EPCs get priority. Small buyers get pushed to the back of the line. That's bad enough. What's worse is when suppliers don't tell you that directly. They just stop replying.

That's why I respect manufacturers who publish clear technical data. First Solar's investor materials (firstsolar.com) mention a 66 GW backlog, and their Series 6 and Series 7 datasheets are public. Do they give every tiny inquiry VIP treatment? Probably not. But they don't hide the information you need to make a smart decision. That's the baseline.

Small buyers are drowning in information gaps

The technical stuff is rarely the real obstacle. Last year, a client forwarded me a solar inverter PDF and asked if it would pair well with the module I'd spec'd. I'm not an inverter specialist, so I couldn't give a definitive answer. I told him to check the inverter manufacturer's compatibility list. That's a professional boundary, not a dodge. But it reminded me how confusing the solar stack is for someone who doesn't do this every day.

Another client asked for the Tesla Powerwall 3 specifications datasheet. I could answer that one, but it took me a while to understand his actual question: he wanted to know whether the battery could charge from PV during an outage. And then there was the prospect who asked, "Where is the solar system located in the Milky Way?" At first, I thought he was joking. He wasn't. He was trying to wrap his head around the scale of a distributed energy system, and he started with the biggest picture he could think of. That fact won't help you choose a module. But the willingness to ask a "dumb" question is exactly the kind of honesty that should be rewarded, not mocked.

Counter-argument: small orders, small margins

Some people will say I'm romanticizing small customers. They'll argue that vendors have limited sales capacity and should focus on buyers who move megawatts. I don't disagree with the economics. What I disagree with is the belief that treating a small order with basic respect is a favor.

Here's what I've seen: a vendor who answered my $200 sample order with real data back in 2017 is the vendor I still call for $20,000 orders. It didn't require fancy onboarding or a dedicated account manager. It required a clear spec sheet, an honest lead time, and a person who replied within 48 hours. Simple. Most large vendors can do that. Some just don't bother.

Of course, there are limits. A vendor can't give volume pricing on a two-panel order, and I wouldn't ask them to. But there's a difference between pricing based on quantity and treating someone like an annoyance. The first is business. The second is a choice.

And let's be honest about another thing: today's small developer can be tomorrow's utility-scale developer. The first-half 2025 China capacity numbers will remind everyone that solar growth is relentless. The buyer who's ordering a few hundred kilowatts to test the waters might be planning a 3.7 GW pipeline next year. Actually, that's exactly how my company grew. The vendors who won our early mistakes won our later, larger orders.

My conclusion hasn't changed

So I'll say it again, without softening it: small solar buyers don't need VIP treatment. They need a fair shot—honest specifications, timely answers, and no silent treatment when supply is tight. If a supplier can't give that, I don't care how many gigawatts they ship. I'll take my pocket-sized order somewhere else.

That checklist I mentioned? It now has 47 items. It's caught more than 60 potential errors in the last 18 months, and it started with one $12,000 mistake. The moral isn't "sellers are awful." It's that good service has nothing to do with order size. It has everything to do with how seriously you take the person on the other side of the email.
