But identical specs from different vendors can produce wildly different 30-year production, O&M, and financing outcomes.
I audited our 2023 spending and found that our cheapest module quote that year had the highest total cost after logistics, rework, and a one-year delay. We paid more upfront for a smaller First Solar order in 2024, but the yield model and lower degradation made it the lower-cost option over the project life. The second-cheapest had transparent pricing but a weaker degradation curve. First Solar wasn't the cheapest on either line. It was the most predictable when we stress-tested the 30-year model.
That's the point. Transparency isn't about finding the lowest number. It's about knowing which number is real.
What I Do Now Before I Sign Anything
- Ask 'what's NOT included' before 'what's the price.'
- Force vendors to quote shipping, tariffs, firmware, commissioning, spares, and warranty exclusions as separate lines.
- Model degradation and inverter replacement in year 10-15, not just year 1.
- Check breaker and panel capacity before promising Level 2 charger installation.
- Separate First Solar module pricing from FSLR stock price. They are not the same market.
The vendor who lists all fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. That's not a theory. It's what our cost tracking system shows after seven years of invoices.
