The Solar Quote That Changed My Definition of First Solar Intrinsic Value

On March 11, 2025, our utility-scale group asked me to review two solar module quotes for a 70 MW AC plant in West Texas. That isn’t usually my job. I’m the office administrator for a 240-person electrical contractor, which means I’ve handled procurement since 2020—roughly 60 to 80 orders a year. I report to both operations and finance, so I know the difference between the number that wins a bid and the number that survives a budget review.

I’m not a solar engineer. If you had asked me to name the first three planets in our solar system, I could do that: Mercury, Venus, Earth. After those first three, I’d start guessing. My knowledge of PV modules was similar. I knew efficiency and warranty mattered. I didn’t know which questions would keep a utility-scale deal from falling apart.

During the kickoff call, someone from the site team asked a side question: “Which country has the most wind turbines?” It sounded like trivia. I looked it up while the meeting continued. China has the most wind turbines, at least by installed capacity. According to IRENA’s end-2023 renewable capacity data, China held roughly 43 percent of the world’s installed wind capacity. No other country was close. That part was easy because it was one number. Comparing solar module quotes was not one number.

The Lower Bid and the Missing Inventory System

The developer’s shortlist included First Solar and one other module maker. I won’t name the other maker. This isn’t a hit piece; the other company might be perfectly reliable. The problem was their quote.

The other quote was lower on price per watt. It also had a sentence that made me stop. Under “warranty registration,” it said the owner would upload serial numbers to “the equipment inventory and monitoring system” after award. But there was no line item for that system, no cost, no format. I emailed to ask whether it was included. The answer came back: “We normally price that once we know pallet details.”

For a utility-scale project, an equipment inventory and monitoring system is not an optional database. Every module serial number has to go from the packing list into a system that matches the physical panel on the racking. If the serial numbers don’t line up, the lender won’t verify the asset, and the developer could face a warranty dispute later. The cheaper quote treated that as an afterthought. I saw a future change order hiding in plain sight.

The First Solar quote felt different. It was not perfect, but it had an exclusions page, and I liked that. I would rather see exclusions than have to invent them. The bid also included a packaging description, a serial-number manifest format, and a warranty registration process. That meant we could populate the owner’s asset tracking system without hiring a consultant to translate the supplier’s data. The datasheet we received showed annual degradation under 0.5 percent. But the real selling point was less romantic: the paperwork made the risk visible.

An EV Charger Told Me the Same Story

That same week, I was buying two EV chargers for our office parking lot. One vendor listed a NEMA 14-50 level 2 charger for $585. I asked whether that price included the cable and plug. It didn’t. The second vendor listed a NEMA 14-50 level 2 charger for $650. That price included a 25-foot cable, a wall bracket, and a manual. I bought the second one. The second one was more expensive upfront and cheaper in total. It was the same lesson from the module bid, just with a smaller price tag.

I’m not telling this story because I think suppliers are always hiding something. Most delays come from assumptions, not conspiracies. But when you’re buying something that has to perform for 25 years, assumptions are expensive.

First Solar Intrinsic Value Isn’t Only for Investors

The phrase “First Solar intrinsic value” usually sounds like finance jargon. Intrinsic value in investing means the estimated true worth of a company, separate from the share price. I used to think that had nothing to do with my purchase orders. Now I think buyers do the same calculation. The “market price” is the line item on the PO. The “intrinsic value” is what a module actually delivers after degradation, warranty friction, financing paperwork, and the project manager who originally signed off is long gone.

First Solar’s own disclosures around early 2025 referenced a contracted backlog of roughly 66 GW. That mattered to our finance team because it meant warranty claims were not hypothetical. But what mattered more to me was that First Solar answered uncomfortable questions before the bid deadline. They told us what was not included. In procurement, that answer is an asset. It turns uncertainty into a number.

Finance asked why I recommended a supplier whose headline price was not the lowest. My one-line summary was: “The other quote is lower in the first year and more expensive in year twenty.” That got the conversation moving. For that specific project, we signed with First Solar.

What I’d Tell Another Buyer

Before you ask “What’s the price?” ask “What’s not included?” Then ask them to write it down. Had I not done that, I would have made a decision on a price per watt that didn’t include a critical asset tracking system. I also probably would have bought an EV charger with no cable, which is just embarrassing.

To be fair, the other module maker might not have intended to hide anything. Maybe they expected the developer’s EPC to handle the equipment inventory and monitoring system separately. But if it wasn’t in the contract, I couldn’t rely on intent. Intent is not a deliverable.

This isn’t a universal verdict, either. For a small rooftop array with no lender requirements, serial-level tracking matters far less, and the cost calculus is completely different. Our context was a utility-scale project with strict reporting and a financing structure that required proof of exactly what was installed. In that context, documentation is part of the module. It has to be.

So yes, I can now tell you which country has the most wind turbines. But the more useful thing I learned is that the hardest number in renewable energy isn’t capacity or efficiency. It’s the number you can’t see until you read the exclusions. First Solar intrinsic value, at least for this administrator, is the value you see when a supplier lets you read the exclusions before signing.
