First Solar Inc News Is Not Enough: A PV Procurement Checklist I Use Before Ordering Modules

I've handled module procurement for utility-scale solar projects since 2019. I've also made enough specification mistakes to know that a confident 'same as last time' is dangerous. When I search First Solar Inc news, I now do it with a checklist next to me.

This isn't a product feature list. It's a process checklist for developers, IPPs, EPCs and anyone who has to turn a solar datasheet into a purchase order. I built it from my own errors.

Why I built this checklist

In July 2022, I approved a change order based on a cached datasheet for a module series that had been quietly updated. The supplier's official page had the current version. I skipped it because I thought we'd bought something similar the year before.

The racking team caught the problem when the module dimensions did not align with the new drawings. That mistake cost about $47,000 in rework and pushed the schedule by nearly two weeks. It was not a technology failure. It was a research failure.

A good module is only right when the part number is current and the spec applies to your actual project.

The checklist

1. Clarify what you are researching before you search

The word 'solar' carries too much context. If I type 'first solar' without any other words, I may get 'First Solar Inc news,' but search engines also connect it to queries like 'first three planets in our solar system.' Both have the word 'solar.' Only one is relevant to a module purchase.

Now I write out the actual question first. If I mean the manufacturer, I search 'First Solar Inc news and Series 7 datasheet' or 'First Solar warranty degradation rates.' If a search result doesn't show that context, I ignore it.

2. Read the manufacturer's own material before third-party commentary

For a public manufacturer like First Solar, I start with company press releases and investor pages. Articles about the company are useful, but they are not the source. If an article is months old and repeats product specs, those specs may be stale.

I also date what I read. A public backlog figure, for example, is only good for the quarter it was announced. The last public backlog figure I saw for First Solar was around 66 GW. If I quote that in a review, I also include the date and where I saw it. First Solar Inc news moves, and that's normal.

3. Compare plant-level cost, not only module price per watt

Thin-film CdTe modules behave differently from crystalline modules in real projects. First Solar's thin-film technology is strong in warm climates and under high ambient temperatures, but I don't claim any module is the only sensible choice. Crystalline silicon may be better in a different logistics or land-use case. I model the whole plant.

The expensive mistake is comparing module price per watt while ignoring racking spacing, power density, inverter DC input range, wiring, land use, cleaning and O&M. A slightly lower $/W module can lose those savings on the other balance-of-system lines.

4. Confirm the degradation and warranty details before trusting the headline number

Efficiency gets the most attention, but output after 30 years usually matters more to project finance. Many product pages mention an annual degradation rate below 0.5%. That number is not universal across every product series and warranty version. Ask whether first-year degradation is separate from later-year degradation, and use the same value in every model.

For a First Solar part, I verify against the current product data sheet and module warranty document, not a marketing summary.

5. Keep inverter and storage categories separate

Power conversion is not one generic market. An electric vehicle uses an automotive on-board power inverter; a utility-scale PV plant uses a large stationary inverter with grid code, voltage and cooling requirements that look nothing like a vehicle inverter. If you are reading market research, check whether it covers the automotive on-board power inverter market or the stationary solar inverter market. Those are different numbers.

Similarly, a Delta 2 EcoFlow portable power station can be useful in the field office. It is not a substitute for a grid-tied energy storage system or a grid-tied inverter. The RFP should keep those lines separate because the engineering requirements are different. Mixing them creates false comparisons.

6. Do not quote cross-technology statistics from memory

Solar module buyers sometimes need to talk about wind or storage in the same market review. When a question is outside my daily data set, I don't answer from memory. Someone may ask, 'how many wind turbines are in Australia?' The correct response is not a guess. It depends on how a turbine is counted, which registry you use and whether you include older or smaller machines.

Honestly, I'm not sure why I spent so many years thinking I needed a number instantly. My best guess is that I wanted to sound prepared. Now I'd rather call back with a correct answer.

7. Ask what is not included before comparing prices

This is the quote-review step. A transparent quote lists freight, project management and other line items upfront. A low number may not be a fake number; it may simply be incomplete. I'd rather see a higher total and know exactly what it covers than accept a bare module price and watch extras appear after the purchase order.

To be fair, this cuts both ways. It is my job to define the scope clearly. When I ask the same question clearly, suppliers can price more fairly.

Final reminder

I still make mistakes. The checklist catches the ones I'm likely to make under deadline pressure. Since our team adopted it, we've caught 14 spec mismatches before they reached the fabricator.

Bottom line: date your sources, separate product categories, and create a paper trail for every cost. A transparent number with a date beats a confident guess.
