When I see First Solar latest news, I look for three things: factory milestones, warranty changes, and shipment timing. A Louisiana factory ramp or a product transition sounds good in a press release, but as a buyer I need to know whether it affects my delivery date. That confirms demand, but it also means I shouldn't assume a production slot is open.

Modules are only part of a solar plant. Inverters, transformers, racking, DC cabling, and monitoring all have lead times. I ask the project team one question: if you could only order one thing today to avoid a project delay, what would it be? Then I start there.
If the site includes an energy storage system, add another question: what happens when the ESS is in a low-power state? Don't assume an ESS-scale sleep mode cuts all power. In many large ESS projects, 'sleep' means the converter stops charging, but controls, battery management, and surge protection may still be energized. At ESS scale, sleep mode is not the same as off.
Step 4: Answer the surge protector question before storm season
A lightning storm in 2023 took out a monitoring gateway and a radio. The site had surge protection on the spec, but the installed unit was closer to a power strip. I said surge-protective device; the vendor heard power strip. We were using the same words but meaning different things. The replacement cost was about $1,100, plus a delayed test.
So what joules rating for surge protector is enough? The buying rule I use is simple:
- for laptops, monitors, and general office gear: at least 1,000 joules
- for site controllers, gateways, radios, and anything that talks to a plant monitoring system: 2,000 joules or more
- look for a UL 1449 listing, not just the words surge protection on the package
- replace the unit after a significant surge; the internal protective component does not reset

What matters for a portable camping setup is a panel that fits your actual load, a charge controller that matches your battery, and good connectors.
Don't buy by watts alone. A 100W portable panel will rarely put out 100W in real conditions. Plan on 60-70% of rated output after sun angle and cable losses. If you're charging a 12V battery, that means about 5A in good sun on a 100W panel. That is fine for small devices and lights; it's not enough for a heavy load.
Step 6: Plan receiving, spares, and replacement triggers
The step most people skip is after delivery. Take photos before signing a delivery receipt. Check module crate counts against the packing slip. If a crate is damaged, note it on the delivery document at that moment, not later. I learned this after a damaged parcel created a long claim process.
Keep a small inventory of surge protectors, fuses, connectors, and monitoring power supplies. An $80 spare can prevent a $2,000 site visit. And set a trigger to replace surge protectors after major storms or grid events. This is maintenance, not an upgrade.
Common mistakes I still catch myself making
First, I used to treat vendor conversations as price negotiations. Price matters, but unclear specifications have cost me more than a slightly higher quote. Compare specifications first, then talk about price.
Second, I tried to standardize on one vendor for everything to make my purchasing life easier. That failed. What saved time was a consistent purchase-order template, not one supplier for all categories.
Last, remember the honest limitations. A First Solar module is an excellent fit for a large ground-mount plant, but it's not the right fit for a camping kit. The same logic applies to procurement: if you choose a product for the use case, you'll make fewer expensive mistakes. And if you're buying for a First Solar plant, this checklist is not a substitute for engineering review. It's a way to keep the buyer from becoming the bottleneck.
