How Does a Solar System Differ from a Galaxy? A First Solar Procurement Lesson
A question about galaxies
On a Monday in July 2022, a client emailed me a question I did not expect: How does a solar system differ from a galaxy? It was not a science quiz. The client was developing an industrial site near Glasgow that would need rooftop solar, EV charging, and battery storage. A director had been hearing the phrase 'solar system' used loosely and wanted a version he could explain to his own team.
The astronomy answer is short. The Solar System is our Sun and the objects bound to it by gravity: planets, moons, asteroids, comets. A galaxy is a much larger structure made of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter. The Solar System sits inside the Milky Way, but it is a system, not a galaxy. I then translated the point to energy. A solar-power system is a bundle of physical equipment: PV modules, inverter, racking, and cabling. It is a defined system sitting inside a larger electrical network. It is not a pile of everything labelled clean energy.
I remember feeling very smart when I sent that answer. The feeling did not survive a July bid review, or a September module review.

I read detailed posts about margin estimates, net sales expectations, ROIC, backlog statistics, and share-price scenarios. Several writers were smart. None of them told me whether Series 6 Plus or Series 7 modules would fit the project's tracker voltage, wind load, or delivery schedule.
The only genuinely useful market-level fact was that First Solar's public backlog around that time was roughly 66 GW, according to the company's investor disclosures. That told me the manufacturer was not likely to disappear before delivery. It did not tell me if that module was right for that site.
The thermochemical energy storage distraction
The worst part came later that week. Another comment mentioned thermochemical energy storage, a set of technologies that use reversible chemical reactions to store heat and release it later. It can be an exciting idea, and it sounded exactly like what the energy transition needs.
I spent two days reading academic papers and demonstration results. Then I added a paragraph to the module-review memo suggesting that the project consider a thermochemical energy storage pilot. My colleague deleted the paragraph before I could defend it. She wrote one sentence in the margin:
We are building a solar farm, not a galaxy.
That stung because she was right. The project had no heat load, no storage customer, and no budget code for a pilot. Thermochemical storage might be a good future solution for an industrial site with heat demand. It was not inside the boundaries of a module procurement review. The detour cost roughly $3,600 in allocated engineering time and pushed our first supplier call back by five days.
What I do now
I still make mistakes, but I now write a one-line system statement before any serious equipment search. What is being bought, where will it be installed, and which contract does it belong to? For a solar module order, the statement might be: 200 MW DC module supply, thin-film CdTe modules from a U.S. factory, delivered to the Louisiana site, with manufacturer documents and warranty terms included.
The statement does not look clever. It prevents a galaxy-sized waste of time.
I also separate research types. Investor commentary about First Solar Seeking Alpha can describe a company's financial story. Datasheets and factory addresses describe equipment. I read one for context and then put it aside. If a manufacturer makes a green claim, I apply the discipline of the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260): a claim needs evidence and qualification. 'Recyclable' must mean recyclable somewhere real, not recyclable in theory.
