Small Solar Buyers Deserve Better: What First Solar Technology Taught Me
I’m the office administrator for a fifteen-person nonprofit. My job description doesn’t say “solar buyer,” but when our ops director asked me to get rooftop solar quotes, I did what most people do: I typed how much does a 10kw solar system cost into a search engine and waited for an answer.
The answer didn’t exist.
Quotes ranged from about $18,000 to $38,000, and every one made different assumptions. One quote left out the inverter. Another treated a rooftop array like a commodity bundle. One company promised “battery-ready” without saying what would actually be in that battery.
I’m not an electrical engineer. I can’t model irradiance or calculate wire losses. But I’ve spent five years buying things for an organization—office supplies, IT equipment, maintenance services—and I know a vendor who respects your project when they see a small order. Most solar salespeople did not respect our project.

Why First Solar technology belongs in a 10kW conversation
When I finally read the datasheets, the big eye-opener was degradation. First Solar’s published annual degradation rate is generally below 0.5% for its Series 6 modules. That doesn’t sound like much, but a solar panel is a 25+ year asset. If one panel chemistry loses 0.5% per year and another loses 1%, the difference in lifetime energy is more than enough to matter.
Why should a small buyer care? Because installers rarely mention degradation. They show you sleek efficiency curves and financing calculators instead. If you know to ask “what is the guaranteed output after year 25,” you stop falling for the cheapest sticker price.
I’m not saying First Solar is the right product for every rooftop, or that silicon panels aren’t good. Many are excellent. But First Solar’s technology is a reference point for one of the least glamorous specs in the industry, and that spec is the one that decides long-term value.
Don’t ignore the manufacturer’s staying power
In 2021, a 150 watt power inverter I bought for a mobile workstation cost about $60. It lasted fourteen months. The company disappeared. I paid for the replacement out of department budget and learned a lesson that has saved me much more since: price is meaningless if the seller isn’t around to honor the warranty.
Solar modules are worse. They have a 25-year work life, sometimes longer. A module company can go out of business before your warranty reaches its teenage years. So when I look at First Solar’s investor materials and see tens of gigawatts in backlog and major factory investments in Louisiana, I pay attention. I can’t project their balance sheet 25 years out—I’m not a financial analyst—but the scale tells me they have real assets, real customers, and real revenue. That matters more to me than a panel’s color.
Battery storage is where small buyers get tripped up
Every solar salesperson wanted to add a battery. And every battery addition made the cost go higher. I went back and forth for two weeks on whether to include storage. It felt farsighted; then I remembered our building lease ends in 2029. Sometimes the smartest battery decision is to wait.
To understand storage basics, I ordered an 18650 battery storage case for a small hobby project. It’s just a plastic holder for cylindrical lithium ion cells, less than $30. It taught me more than any sales presentation: cells need to be matched, the BMS has to be designed for the chemistry, and the inverter has to communicate with the battery. A cheap “battery-ready” promise can mean nothing if those pieces don't work together.
But wait—isn’t First Solar a utility-scale company?
Yes. That’s a fair pushback. A 10kW quote is not going to be fulfilled directly by First Solar. I doubt they care about one office roof in any direct sense. The point isn’t to make you a First Solar customer. The point is to use their technology as an education tool.
When I search “how much does a 10kw solar system cost,” I’m really asking: “What should I expect, and where can salespeople hide cost?” First Solar’s approach taught me to look for the facts that only serious manufacturers publish. Degradation rates, warranty terms, and financial health are not glossy marketing details; they’re procurement red flags.
The small customer standard
I know my sample size is small. I got four quotes, visited two of the installers, and made one spreadsheet that I’m not sure anyone else in the office fully read. But my experience matches a pattern I’ve seen across every vendor category: suppliers who treat small orders as unimportant are training their customers to leave.
I believe no business should be penalized for wanting a smaller system. A small roof still means real electricity, real carbon reduction, and real invoices. Good solar vendors explain their choices. Others send fine print and vague promises. You get to choose which one you work with.
Small doesn’t mean unimportant. It means potential. Vendors who respect that are the ones who’ll get our next order—whether that’s another 10kW system, office supplies, or a $200 test purchase that becomes a long relationship.
